Playing Pocket Jacks

pocket jacksPretty much the only time I would raise with JJ is if I was short stacked in a tournament, then its an iron clad all in. Also short handed say near the end of an STT i may also go all in here to put pressure on opponents and even if they call i should be in decent shape.

However if its cash games you are talking about, then the only way to play in my honest opinion is to see the flop as cheap as possible. If you flop your set you have a monster hand that is awesomely disguised. You can take down opponents whole stacks often here in this position.

If you are raised in a cash game simply smooth call and again hope for your set. This is an even better opportunity to take someone down for a huge pot. If you suspect they have a higher pocket pair then you now have them over a barrel and people will easily give up whole stacks with their AA or KK. Theyre not playing wrong but youre hand is disguised and very very strong.

A note on calling a raiser also - its important to look at stack sizes here and how deep you and your opponent are. With JJ you'd be looking at your opponent (and yourself) being deep (AT LEAST 10 times the size of the raise). Say it was raised $2, you would want you and your opponent to have $20 behind them. This is important because you need to hit your set which you are 7.5/1 to do. As you can see the maths back this up as being a profitable play especially with JJ because if the raiser was an AK your ahead anyway. Obviously the deeper the stack the better. 20 times is great .

This stack size is perhaps more relevant to the medium pocket pairs such as 77 and 88 etc where you NEED to hit your set to take down the hand. Here you are getting great implied odds if you and the raiser are deep stacked to take down a huge pot. This is one of the main ways I take down big pots in cash games. I have countless times called a $2 raise with 99 and hit my set only for the pre flop raiser to have AA and end up all in against me .

AND dont be afraid to give it up. The vast majority of the time you will not hit a set. If two overcards fall let it go without a thought, theres always better times. If the cards flop all less than a jack (which will happen sometimes for sure) then you have to decide what to do and your hand is probably good. You need to play it fast though and dont be afraid to let it go because JJ isnt a great hand without that set.

Hope that helped.
